What your Doctor May Not Know About Over-the-Counter Sleep Remedies

By SleepASAP

Sleep disorders are oftentimes treated with over-the-counter remedies. Products such as Tylenol PM, as well as the natural supplement melatonin, are two of the biggest sellers nationwide.

Diphenhydramine, the active ingredient in Benadryl, is the most commonly used chemical in over-the-counter sleep remedies. Diphenhydramine, which is an antihistamine, induces sleep due to the effects it has on the histamine system. Unfortunately, the sleep that is induced with these products is often of poor quality, and the effects may last into the next day. In addition, these over the counter remedies also place unnecessary stress on the liver, kidneys, and gastrointestinal tract.

Melatonin is a natural human hormone that influences the circadian rhythm. The circadian rhythm is the 24-hour biological clock that regulates the body’s sleep-wake cycle. As darkness ensues, the body begins to produce melatonin, which in turn triggers drowsiness and a desire to sleep. Melatonin is readily available as a natural sleep supplement, and provides a healthy, natural alternative for the sleep deprived.
